N.J. Wraith
N.J. is a New York-based oil painter working at the intersection of the seraphic and the sepulchral. Her work draws from Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolist traditions, medieval manuscript illumination, and the Victorian illustrators of folklore - traditions that understood ornament as integral to meaning, death and the life as inseparable, and a painted surface as capable of holding secrets.
She works on linen, wood, and gilded surfaces, weaving imagery from poetry, myth and fairy tales into compositions that integrate text and frame as elements of the work rather than its container.
